Why should I pursue Self-realization?

In a recent gathering, I was asked why Self-realization matters. We were sharing diverse accounts of awakening experiences, and this individual was beginning to doubt whether Self-realization was worthwhile, as many stories of awakening include struggle, confusion, pain, loss, instability, fear, and suffering. If it’s potentially such a hard road to Self-realization, then why pursue it at all? This is an understandable inquiry given some of the stories that are out there, mine included. I see three main reasons why Self-realization matters, and why it’s the most worthwhile endeavor.

Truth. Self-realization means knowing our true nature. It’s a waking up to the reality of existence, the ground of being. It means gaining wisdom about ourselves, others, and the world. It’s an Understanding of the essence of Life. What could be more important than that?

Joy. When we realize our true nature, we experience unconditional love and fulfillment in every moment, a connection and communion with all things, and a sense of well-being in all we do. It’s the end of suffering, and the permanent presence of peace. What could be more desirable than that?

Service. Realizing the Self means greater compassion and service in the world. It means recognizing our Oneness with life and striving to increase Truth and Joy for all sentient beings. What could be more rewarding than that?

Every person’s journey is unique. No two people in history will ever have the same personality, life circumstances, or karmic wiring, and therefore nobody experiences or expresses the Divine in the same way. Consciousness is intelligent and the universe is always acting for our highest good. Trust the process, focus on being here now, and do the best you can to become more Self-aware. Your journey (aka Life) is perfect. It might not seem that way at times, but this is only because you haven’t fully discovered the depths of your inner resources. It’s often the most challenging moments in our lives that bring out the best qualities within us. Dedicate yourself to the One, and all things will be added unto you. What could be better than that?

Everything else can wait, but our search for God cannot wait.
